The discom time bomb: state utilities owe ₹1.4 lakh crore and counting
India's distribution companies — discoms — are the unwritten line item in every renewables forecast. As of the most recent PFC compilation, aggregate dues to generators stand at ₹1.4 lakh crore. AT&C losses, after a brief improvement, are climbing again.
State by state
Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh together account for over half the outstanding. Gujarat and Maharashtra remain structurally healthier.
Why renewables care
Round-the-clock tenders, hybrid capacity, and battery storage all assume the buyer pays on time. When the buyer is a state discom with a 90-day average payable, the cost of capital for the developer goes up — and the LCOE story gets harder.
